Archive News Mar 20, 2001 - update 1
March 20, 2001Contrary to previous reports indicating that ex-UNDER / VICE six-stringer and former MACHINE HEAD guitar tech Jack Cargile had landed the SKINLAB guitarist slot left vacant by the recently-departed Scott Sergeant, it now appears that SKINLAB are in fact still searching for a permanent replacement. Interested parties can write to: [email protected].
Swedish death metal legends UNLEASHED have reportedly reformed and are planning on releasing a brand new studio album (the group's first since 1995's Victory) at the end of this year or in early 2002. This surprising development coincides with Century Media Records' plans to reissue some of the group's early recordings, several of which are still considered to be among the genre's all-time classics.
...
The following is an 'open letter' to the group's fans written by UNLEASHED bassist/vocalist Johnny Hedlund regarding the upcoming re-issues:
...
“Way back then, in the mid '80s, when death metal was still not a commercial form of music, I can assure you folks that there were far more death metal parties to attend than concerts. Death metal was more a lifestyle than anything else really. Bands formed all around the world and traded tapes and shirts with one another. Obviously, the ultimate goal would be to record a full-length album and go on tour to meet all the people you've been writing letters to all these years...
...
That's where it all started one day back in 1990. UNLEASHED hooked up with Century Media and discussed to work together on an EP at first.
...
The band went down to Germany to record this first 'single' in Noble studios. The six songs from that recording session is what you now can listen to from this 'early recordings' UNLEASHED box.
...
Actually, it was my first recording as a vocalist! We had a different vocalist on our earlier demos, when I played the bass only. It turned out very well for the time being, and we were very happy with it the way it came out. A little later, in 1991, we signed with Century Media for the first full-length record, and that's when a brand new era had begun. As I recall, we also played a couple of really good shows in Dortmund prior to the first album recording Where No Life Dwells. I also remember a couple of 'celebration-nights' shortly after the album was done... I believe we all still have a hangover from those nights...
...
When our first record was out, the tours begun and many of you metal fans know about the rest.
...
This here is just to let some of the new fans of UNLEASHED know that there was a time before the CDs, the bigger tours, and the large magazine reviews. Frankly, it was more a way to live rather than to make a living.
...
On the other hand, there hasn't been such a major change, except for the better equipment, learning from experiences over the years, and the fact that you actually have to make a living as you grow older. We're still a bunch of metalheads and that's the way it's always gonna be!
...
When you listen to this music from the UNLEASHED earlier recordings and compare it to our most recent release, we hope you'll find that UNLEASHED can't be tamed, it can't be leashed! We're gonna develop and find new ways over the years but the roots are still there. And after all, it's a lifestyle more than anything else really.
...
Best regards to you all
Johnny for UNLEASHED”

The United States Supreme Court yesterday (March 19) turned down, without comment, an Ohio student's argument (on appeal) that school officials could not keep him from wearing T-shirts depicting MARILYN MANSON, a 'shock rock' star who took his stage name from Marilyn Monroe and mass killer Charles Manson. Nicholas J. Boroff was a senior when he arrived at Van Wert High School in Van Wert, Ohio, in August 1997 wearing a MARILYN MANSON T-shirt. The front of the shirt depicted a three-faced Jesus and the back of the shirt said 'believe' with the letters 'lie' highlighted. A school administrator told Boroff the shirt was offensive and told him to either turn it inside out, go home and change, or leave and be considered truant. Boroff left, and returned each of the next four school days wearing other MARILYN MANSON T-shirts. Each time he was told he could not attend class wearing the shirt. Boroff sued, saying school officials violated his constitutional rights to free speech and due process. A federal judge ruled for the school district, and the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed.
